Research and scientific profile

The research is focused on applied mathematics. The following areas are dominating:

  • mathematical control theory
    • systems on time scales
    • systems of fractional order
    • controllability and observability of control systems
    • positive systems
    • systems with delays
  • calculus of variations and optimization
  • multi-agent systems with discrete and continuous time
  • machine learning
  • partial differential equations
  • mathematical models in biology and economics
  • the theory of non-commutative rings
  • abstract algebra

International cooperation

Members of the Department of Mathematics conduct scientific cooperation with:

  • Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia
  • University of Aveiro in Portugal
  • University of Plovdiv in Bulgaria
  • University of Paris-Saclay, CentraleSupelec in Paris, France

Didactic activities

The Department of Mathematics offers the following courses:

  • mathematical analysis (calculus)
  • differential equations
  • probability and statistics
  • abstract and linear algebra
  • operation research
  • financial mathematics
  • mathematical control theory
  • fuzzy sets
  • optimization and linear programming

Organisational activities

The Department’s employees lead Student Science Circles:

  • Math4You
  • Scientific Circle of Games

The main goal of the circles is to popularize mathematics and develop research passion. Members of the circles participate in the organization of cyclical events popularizing mathematics, such as Podlasie Days of Mathematics or the Day of the Number of Pi, and take part in events related to the Bialystok University of Technology or the Faculty of Computer Science itself.

Many members of the Department of Mathematics are also members of the Center of Popularization of Mathematics “Signum”, in the framework of which they give popular lectures on mathematics and take part in science festivals, preparing events related to mathematics.
